Product Design

introduction

As part of the third year of our Creative Design course, we were given a product design brief, commissioning the design of a record player for a specific price point, along with the name and logo of the associated business.

After researching the current market, I decided to concentrate my efforts on the luxury market, with an emphasis on aesthetic and style, as this was the least populated segment of the market. In fact, the upper end of the record player market was occupied almost exclusively by professional grade equipment, trading aesthetic value in favour of functionality.

The final design, the 'NG Coffer', is a contemporary take on a classic design, drawing from the record player cabinets of the 40's and 50's but scaled down to fit within the modern home. In this spirit, the 'Coffer' also boasts an impressive amount of storage which can be further increased by removing the detachable turntable (allowing the speakers and turntable to be placed in separate locations while still maintaining their connection). Another small but useful design feature is, when the 'Coffer' is opened, a notch is created at the back for the display of record sleeves. This allows the user to proudly display their favourite album or keep a record's track list in plain view while they listen.

Below is a series of visual elements documenting the development process, as well as a collection of renderings and possible variations of the final design.
